Needless to say, Clean out Refrigerator Day is an American celebration. But knowing our readiness to adopt western practices, it shouldn't take too long before this one crosses over. It is a useful ritual, so why not? Here's one vote for a Philippine version of it.
The refrigerator is one of the focal points of the kitchen. A lot of people depend on it to safely store perishable foods while not in use. Keeping food cold prevents it from spoiling quickly. The process of refrigeration extends the shelf life of meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy products, condiments and other food items. Having a refrigerator also allows us to enjoy cold drinks and desserts.
Many of us take the refrigerator for granted. This kitchen appliance quietly sits in a corner of our kitchen. We rarely give it a second thought but the refrigerator is one of the hardest working units inside the house.
In the older days, there were no refrigerators to keep food and water cold. Just imagine how tough it was preventing food from spoiling. People spent a lot of time preserving food using salt. During the winter, people used to bury food in the snow to keep it fresh. Before the refrigerator was invented, people needed to consume milk immediately because it spoiled easily. Now you can easily buy milk at the supermarket, store it inside the refrigerator and drink it at leisure (before the specified expiration date).
The invention of the refrigerator changed how we live each day. Today storing food is easier and less complicated because majority of homes are equipped with refrigerators. We don’t have to waste our time curing food with salt to preserve it. We also worry less about food-borne diseases that can arise from contaminated food. Today we safely store our food inside the refrigerator and off we go to do our daily routine.
