LEAKED: iPhone 4S Pics Appear on Apple’s Website, The first images of the iPhone 4S have apparently leaked directly from Apple’s website.

By playing with the URLs on Apple’s website, 9to5mac was able to pull up an image of what appears to be the company’s next-generation iPhone. The devices (black and white) look remarkably similar to the iPhone 4. One notable change is the repositioning of the proximity sensor on the black iPhone 4S, which now matches its location on the white iPhone 4.

There are also a few new apps on the iPhone 4S, including a “Newsstand” app, a “Videos” app and a “Music” app, which replaces the “iPod” app.

We’re at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. for the unveiling of the new iPhone. Check out our liveblog for the latest news from today’s Apple event.

Apple iPhone Unveiling [LIVE BLOG], This morning, Apple’s latest handheld wonder — probably the iPhone 5 — will take the stage in the hand of newly minted Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple’s iPhone unveiling. It’s likely to be a career moment for Cook and an important turning point for the beloved, and sometimes beleaguered, phone.

Since Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, it has captured the imagination of millions of customers around the world. Yet, the world of technology has undergone significant change since we saw our first “think-do,” touchscreen based hardware from Apple. Most significantly, Google Android happened. After getting off to a slow start in 2008 with T-Mobile’s G1, the platform has skyrocketed, eating up a significant portion of the smartphone market and showing consumers that virtually any other company could build a touch-screen slab phone.

The Apple iPhone 5, which may or may not show up at this morning’s event, could be Apple’s best hope for recapturing its momentum and leadership position in the smartphone space. Without something spectacular, it’s likely the next iPhone will do well but not much to wrest the smartphone lead from the likes of HTC, Motorola and Samsung.

For Cook, this will be his first big moment since Apple founder and former CEO Steve Jobs stepped down. Cook has been on the Apple stage before, but to say that all eyes will be on Cook and his performance this go-around would be an understatement.

Mashable is at Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., campus this morning, following the event and live blogging it all in the space below. We’ll do our best to give you the play-by-play and provide images of what we see going on around and in front of us. If we get close to the new Apple products (maybe two phones!), you will, too.

The iPhone 5 will represent a major upgrade over its predecessor, helping "shatter" the sales record captured by the iPhone 4 at launch last year, says an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities.

Providing his take on the new iPhone ahead of today's launch event, analyst Brian White expects the iPhone 5 to offer a "sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure" that's more like the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4. The new enclosure will not only look better but be stronger and lighter, avoiding the cracks that sometimes appear in the glass back of the iPhone 4.

The new enclosure could even pave the way for Apple to bump up the screen by at least half an inch to 4 inches or more. Echoing the opinions of other analysts, White also expects the new iPhone to boast a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera.

"Apple will clearly need to upgrade the processor speed to at least a Dual Core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, while upgrading to an 8-megapixel 1080p camera that is now also on the Galaxy S II," White said.

Combine all the new features with the pent-up demand, and the new phone could easily outshine the 1.7 million iPhone 4 units sold during that device's initial three days of sales last year, says the analyst.

he new iPhone will also benefit from a larger landscape as it's now offered by 228 carriers compared with only 154 last year. International markets will play a bigger role in the phone's adoption, especially if Apple proves to be as aggressive in its global push as it was with the iPad 2. And if rumors of both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S come true, White sees China as an attractive market for the lower-cost 4S phone.

Speculating further on the phone's new feature, White believes the new iPhone will be a world phone, offering both CDMA and GSM compatibility. Though he sees 4G as unlikely, he believes Apple could support a "3.5G" technology, such as HSPA+, which is currently used by AT&T.

Apple is also expected to grab a healthy number of both new and existing customers.

"Moving into the last few months of 2011, we do not see any leading smartphone vendor that has a product powerful enough to strongly dissuade consumers from upgrading to the iPhone 5," White added. "In fact, we are noticing a new wave of consumers looking forward to buying their very first iPhone this year."

we will be covering Apple's "Lets Talk iPhone" event today, starting about 30 minutes before the 10 a.m PT kickoff.

The New iPhone Is Coming and I Don’t Want It, It’s been 14 months since Apple unveiled the iPhone 4. This radical redesign slathered the touchscreen phone in glass and metal. Despite Antennagate, the phone has been a hit. If you bought one, as I did, it’s likely a year old or less. That’s pretty fresh technology, isn’t it? Yet, I’m guessing that many of you are, like me, thinking about trading in your still shiny, still powerful, still effective phone for a new iPhone 5.

And why is that?
The gadget trade-up phenomenon is nothing new, but it always amazes me. In what other industry do consumers so readily turn in something that works just fine for something else that may work only incrementally better? Cars come to mind. People lease them, and then a few years into what is more or less a long-term car rental, they turn their car in for a newer model. Car technology doesn’t change that much in three years, but the consumer can get a completely different car. In other words, they can go from driving a sedan to, say, a convertible.

In the case of gadgets, three years would be a lifetime. The iPhone is only four years old and has gone through more than one major update. So perhaps that explains the urge to trade in, or maybe it doesn’t. Here’s what I think: Gadget owners don’t like to be left behind or to look like their handheld status symbol is in any way out of date. Everyone, it seems, knows about the iPhone 5 launch. If a few months from now you’re caught walking around with an iPhone 4, it could be a major gadget embarrassment.

For me, the knowledge a new iPhone is on the horizon induces a dual sense of fear and paranoia. I’m afraid if I do not jump to trade in my 2-month-old iPhone 4, I’ll be out of step with “The New” in technology. In my position, I can’t afford that. Paranoia comes into play when I see other people looking at me holding the iPhone 4. Mashable readers expect me to own the latest and greatest. Otherwise they may think less of me. At least that’s what I think they’re thinking when they look at me.

If I think about this rationally, the new iPhone 5 is not worth trading in my “old” one. Do I need a bigger screen that will make the perfectly-sized iPhone larger and more unwieldy in my pocket? No.

My iPhone is a peppy little device, so that new A5 chip doesn’t turn me on. The A4 CPU handles games and pretty much any task I throw at it with aplomb. What I could really use is all-day battery life, even when I use data for 12 hours. That doesn’t happen with the iPhone 4 and it won’t happen with the iPhone 5, either. If Apple CEO Tim Cook steps up this morning and announces a new battery technology, I may change my tune.

I like my iPhone’s 5-megapixel camera and have taken tons of great, fun shots and excellent 720 p video. When I want higher megapixel images, I pick up my Sony NEX-5 camera. It shoots 1080p, though I almost never shoot video at that resolution.

I love the look of my iPhone, so why do I need the teardrop shape? Will it change my life? No. Might I be more apt to drop the phone when I grab it by the skinny end? Yes.

What about The Assistant? That sounds awesome. I can speak to my phone, in natural language sentences, and it will respond with useful information and answers. If I say, “Where can I go to buy an iPhone 6?” It will gently explain to me that none are available in my area because the phone doesn’t exist yet.

Don’t forget that I can still get an upgrade of sorts simply by installing iOS 5 on my iPhone 4. I can get the deep Twitter integration (which I will love), iMessage will give me group messaging and more (through 3G and Wi-Fi), I can back up and restore via iCloud and, essentially, never connect my iPhone 4 to a PC again.

Put simply, I do not need the iPhone 5. My iPhone 4 makes me very happy. Seriously, I really don’t need a new phone. I’m happy with what I’ve got. Really. Truly.

Unrelated question: What are iPhone 4’s going for on eBay these days?

iPhone 5 Release Countdown: Why New Apple Phone will Break Sales Records, Apple Inc.'s next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5, will be unveiled in hours in the United States, and is expected to break Apple's all previous launch-day sales records.

If you have owned an iPhone 3GS for more than a year, there are chances you were biding your time till iPhone 5 is launched, giving a skip, half-heartedly, to the iPhone 4. And you will hurry to take a take a place in the serpentine queue in front of an Apple Store when the device hits the shelf.

Now, this is called the pent-up demand, which is also the result of a sixteen-month gap in the iPhone cycle. The iPhone 5 release date frenzy has reached a crescendo with just hours left for the unveiling of the most sought after consumer gadget this year.

The demand is so huge that Apple could sell as many as 1.7 million units on the first day when the device is made available in stores, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. For the record, as many as 1.5 million units of Apple iPhone 4 had been sold on the first day of launch.

For Apple, this huge sales windfall will make up for the sales momentum it may have lost when it allowed a longer-than-usual gap between the iPhones. Also, there have been reports in the past that the iPhone 5 waiting game was part of Apple's strategy.

In a straightforward way, observers considered that Apple wanted to prep its iPhone with the iCloud and the iOS so that it can trump competition. The cynics said Apple had run out of steam and was depending rather on building up hype ahead of the launch. It was also said Apple wanted to release an iPhone closer to the onset of the holiday season to cash in on the year-end sales spurt.

However, where is all this surging demand coming from? According to a study by mobile ad network InMobi, as many as 41 percent of mobile users in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are eager to buy the iPhone5. The recent survey had also found that iPhone 5 launch will trigger an exodus from users of smartphones of the rival companies.

It said while 52 percent of BlackBerry users would love to switch to the iPhone5, 27 percent of Android users would dump their loyalty and flock to Apple.

It can also be figured out that iPhone 5 being offered on at least two national carriers will throttle up the sales. Apart from AT&T and Verizon, Sprint is also rumored to be offering iPhone 5 soon, making it an interesting three-way race. There have been unconfirmed reports that Sprint has inked a $20-billion deal with Apple to buy as many as 30.5 million next generation iPhones.

For the record, Apple had sold a staggering 20.34 million iPhones in the third quarter. The company sold 18.65 million iPhones in the second quarter of this year while the sales number for the first quarter was 16.24 million. According to Tim Cook, the total sales of iOS devices in the third quarter was 33 million.

Consummate User Experience

Throwing light into the possible features and specifications of iPhone, White wrote the following: "We expect the iPhone 5 to get a makeover with a sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure that more closely resembles the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4, which will not only prove more aesthetically pleasing but also stronger, lighter and avoid the back-side "glass breaks" of last year."

He also says there could be a dual core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, "while upgrading to a 8 megapixel 1080p camera that is now also on the Galaxy S II" was possible as well.

When it comes to consummate consumer satisfaction and cutting design innovations, there is none like Apple. The various Android phones, which have been touted from time to time as "iPhone killers," may have similar features as the upcoming iPhone 5, but Apple has managed to retain the aura of being the master class. It remains to be seen if iPhone 5 launch will cement this image.

Apple has conceivably equipped its next smartphone with hardware and software features that will help it roll over the competition. Whichever way you look at it, the rumored specifications of iPhone5 make it a compelling device, and rivals will find the soil being washed away from under their feet.

Critics can say Apple is playing catch-up with Android and that many of the 200 "new" features in iOS 5 are already there in Android phones, but enthusiasts can say Apple has plugged holes to offer an even better user experience with its iPhone5.

iPhone 5 will probably have features like: Edge-to-edge 3.7-inch or 4-inch display, speech-recognition capabilities, an improved flash unit for the camera and strong gaming capabilities with an A5 processor. It is rumored that iPhone will have Imagination Technologies' PowerVR Series6 mobile graphics processing architecture, 8-megapixel camera, 1080p full high-definition videos, panoramic photo capabilities, Qualcomm chips to support GSM/CDMA technologies for AT&T/Sprint/Verizon, and wireless charging. iPhone 5 could also have a high-capacity battery, near-field communications support, and increased random access memory, along with 4G support.

On the software front, there could be features such as a notification center, background updates, cloud sync, wireless sync, reminders with a geolocation feature, OTA updates, Twitter integration and voice control. There could be additional features like a camera shortcut when the phone is locked, a simplified reader view in Safari, widgets, rich-text formatting, LED flash for calls and alerts, custom vibration, alternate routes in maps, and HD streaming in YouTube over 3G.

iPhone 5 Scam: Fake Apple Announcement Email Leads to PC Virus [WARNING], While the tech world holds its collective breath for the Tuesday iPhone announcement from Cupertino, some unscrupulous hackers are taking advantage of the fact that we don’t know exactly what the new phone looks like yet — with a fake email, supposedly from Apple, announcing the “iPhone 5S.”

True, the iPhone 5S mockup doesn’t look very realistic. Those of us paying attention to reports and rumors know that it isn’t very likely to be see-through or monochromatic. Its very name is a mashup of two possible Apple phones — the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S. The grammatically-challenged text below the picture should be a tip-off, too: “Introducing the iPhone that lets you do more than ever. And do it amazingly faster.”

But for those who aren’t paying attention, and who are only vaguely aware that a new iPhone is launching this week, such an email — complete with an “order now” button — could make easy bait for malware. And that’s just what this email is, according to security firm Sophos — a lure for users to unintentionally install a nasty little Trojan called Mal/Zapchas-A.

Ironically, given the Apple-based announcement, the malware only affects Windows machines. The email was first noticed by Dutch technology journalist Abram Wagenaar. It bears a great deal of resemblance to a similar email that did the rounds just before the Steve Jobs keynote at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

That email suggested we’d see an “iPhone 5S” with a built-in, slide-out keyboard. The look of that email was less Apple-like than the latest effort, though much of the text was similar. Memo to malware makers: You’ve learned Photoshop; now try brushing up on your copy editing.

No iPhone 5? Apple May Only Launch iPhone 4S, Expecting Apple to unveil the iPhone 5? You may be in for a disappointment, according to various reports. New evidence and speculation points to the existence of an iPhone 4S, rather than the iPhone 5 many people are expecting. The most recent iTunes developer beta includes several references to a CDMA iPhone 4S, according to 9to5mac.

Apple’s inventory system contains references to an iPhone 4S as well, under the codename “N94AP.” This story only gets more intriguing, though. Macrumors points out that the iPhone 4S reference has been in the iTunes beta since late August. And a Gizmodo report obtained pictures of what it believes to be a cheaper model of the iPhone 4, codename “N90A.”

So where does this leave the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S? Once again, these rumors show that nobody actually knows what Apple is planning. Several of our sources are certain that Apple will only release an iPhone 4S, while a few others think Apple will be rolling out an upgraded iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5 next week. Nobody can agree on what Apple plans to unveil on Tuesday.

But here’s something to consider: a whopping 86% of Mashable‘s readers think that Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5 on Tuesday. Anything less than that is likely to be seen as a disappointment. Regardless, we expect the new iPhone to sport an 8MP camera, the faster Apple A5 processor and a voice-based “Assistant” feature based on its 2009 Siri acquisition.

Would you be disappointed if Apple released an iPhone 4S instead of an iPhone 5? What features do you want to see the most in a new Apple phone?

Cook's time to shine with new Apple iPhone 5, Tim Cook finally gets his chance to stride out from under Steve Jobs' shadow, and he could not have picked a better time or device to mark his unofficial debut as Apple Inc's CEO.

The latest generation of the iPhone still the smartphone industry's gold standard after four years -- is expected to see the light of day this Tuesday, just in time for the holidays.

Even in a dismal economy, consumers should again line up in droves for a souped-up device that also marks Cook's first major product launch since taking over from Jobs in August.

The so-called iPhone 5 is widely expected to have a bigger touchscreen and faster processor than the current iPhone 4, which helped the company stay a step ahead of rivals in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Its challenge will be to "wow" consumers with yet more game-changing innovations and top itself. The aging iPhone 4 is still an unqualified blockbuster: with more than 20 million sold in the third quarter that ended June 25 alone, it is likely to become the world's top-selling smartphone.

"Consumers view Apple products as a must-have," said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund, which owns Apple shares. "Apple phones and products have become almost a necessity. We don't expect them to falter."

But the latest version of the gadget that helped define the smartphone category is coming at a time when the world economy is slowing and competition is at its peak. More than 550,000 Google Inc Android-based devices -- including tablets -- are activated each day globally.

Apple's ability to generate enthusiasm among consumers and its command of the higher-end market, however, may make it less susceptible to a broader slowdown, investors and analysts say.

Cook is likely to take the stage at Apple central at Cupertino's 1 Infinite Loop, where Wall Street will get a chance to see first-hand how the acknowledged operations maven fares at a major product launch. Although a highly regarded executive, he is not known for pitching products.

SILICON VALLEY DEBUT

Apple product launches are the most closely watched events on the technology calendar. The new model, which some have dubbed the iPhone 5, will have a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera, one source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters in August.

The event will take place in Silicon Valley rather than downtown San Francisco where Apple made some of its most famous announcements.

"Most interesting is whether new CEO Tim Cook will lead the keynote and whether ... Steve Jobs will participate," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said.

"Tim is perceived as an operations and supply chain guru and that he certainly is, but we believe it is too early to write him off as not a visionary and showman like Steve Jobs."

The Apple co-founder, a pancreatic cancer survivor who stepped down in August after his third medical leave, is expected to make an appearance, though a no-show by the Apple co-founder will not be a major disappointment.

"Investors would like to see Steve Jobs to confirm that he is still involved, but we have dealt with the fact that he's not going to be as involved," Smith said. "We'd love to see an appearance but it's not critical."

Apple's iPhone has been a huge success since it debuted in 2007, transforming the company from a computer and music-player maker into one of the world's leading mobile device makers. It accounts for about 40 percent of Apple's revenue, with margins estimated at roughly 60 percent.

But it faces stiff competition from phones based on Google's Android operating system, such as Samsung Electronics' Galaxy line.

The iPhone's U.S. market share in August was 28 percent, making it No. 2. Android was No. 1 with 43 percent of the U.S. market, Nielsen data show.

Yet longer-term, investors are more focused on Apple's international push, particularly in Asia.

Cook has said China is a key market. The world's most valuable technology company has mostly catered to the higher end of a booming market in those countries, but is now trying to release a cheaper phone, sources told Reuters in August.

WHAT'S IN STORE TUESDAY?

Finnish rival Nokia dominates the lower end of the lucrative Asian market. Some investors and analysts expect another version of the iPhone 4 to be launched along with the next-generation model.

"We also expect the announcement of a lower-priced iPhone that will basically be a lower-cost 3GS," Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek said, referring to the event.

The new phone is prompting Wall Street to forecast that Apple will post enormous sales in the October-to-December quarter, with shipments expected to be in the range of 29 million.

The iPhone is currently sold by AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc. Many analysts expect Sprint will become the third U.S. operator to sell the iPhone when the next version is launched.

The new phone is also expected to accelerate the momentum in Apple shares, which are trading at around $381, off a record high of $422.86. The stock remains a far cry from brokerage price targets that range from an average of $490 to a high of $666.

The launch event invite, when it landed last week, set off a typical frenzy of speculation. Various analysts quickly dissected one image in particular on the Apple invitation, which depicts four familiar icons found on iPhones, as a possible signal for the number of new phones to be unveiled.

Speculation about the new iPhone's features is fevered, with the list of possibilities ranging from faster wireless Internet connectivity to voice-navigation capabilities.

"What we found most intriguing is that the green phone icon on the invite has a number 1 next to it, perhaps signaling that only one new iPhone will be announced," Wu said.

iPhone 5: Here’s What It Might Look Like, What will the iPhone 5 look like? Outside of a certain office complex in Cupertino and a few other secret places around the world, nobody knows the exact answer to that, but many are willing to guess.

Here’s a gallery that shows the top most intuitive attempts at predicting the future of iPhone 5 some educated guesses based on leaks, others wild yet beautiful stabs in the dark, and still others just wishful thinking. The truth must lie somewhere within. Will it have a rounded back like the iPad 2? Will its sides be squared off, will its cross section be teardrop-shaped, are those leaked case designs indicative of the iPhone 5′s final design?

Of course, all these questions and more will be answered on October 4 when the new iPhones are revealed, but until then, let’s take a look at this gallery of dreams, speculations, rumors and hearsay, putting it all together into an impression of what we might be seeing at the big rollout next month.

iPhone 5 Countdown: When Can You Actually Buy One?, So it seems we may finally know the day Apple CEO, Tim Cook will unveil the iPhone 5 and the lower-cost phones that will likely accompany it: Tuesday, Oct. 4. What we don’t know is when you’ll actually be able to pick one up.

One date is almost certainly out: Tuesday, Oct. 4. Even if Apple could overcome the logistical hurdle of getting all its phones ready on the day of the announcement, that’s just not the company’s style. Its world-class marketing mandarins and PR mavens know all too well the value of building anticipation. There needs to be enough time to get people camping overnight outside Apple stores, for one thing. And this year, if early polling is any indication, the lines could be longer than ever.

So how much longer will we have to wait? AllThingsD, the outlet that leaked the announcement news from its gold-plated Apple sources, suggests the phones will go on sale “within a few weeks.” That would put launch day somewhere between Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday, Oct. 18. However, as Apple 2.0 points out, iOS device launches seem to be getting closer and closer to the announcement date. The iPhone 4 took 17 days to make it to stores, but the iPad 2 was there in just nine days.

So if we’re on the iPad 2 schedule, expect to see the iPhone 5 in stores on Thursday, Oct. 13. But there are plenty of reasons to think it might arrive earlier. Remember the leaked Sprint announcement blacking out vacation time for store employees in the first two weeks of October? It would be odd if Sprint were to go to that trouble, only to allow employees to take time off after the first two business days of heavy iPhone 5-based foot traffic.

That’s one reason why we’re sticking with the U.S. sale date we predicted two weeks ago: Friday, Oct. 7. Yes, it’s only four days after the announcement event, but bear with us. All indications are that Apple has coordinated this launch more closely than ever with its retail and carrier partners, hence the plethora of leaks from Sprint, Best Buy and AT&T, among others. And with all eyes on Tim Cook’s first product unveiling, what better way for him to wow the crowd than to tell them they can get their hands on their object of desire at the end of the week? (That would fit Cook’s brand, too: he’s renowned as a maestro of inventory management.)

Friday launch dates seem to work well for Apple (see the iPad 2 launch); it can take advantage of the fact that relatively little tech news drops on a Friday, as well as the here-comes-the-weekend carnival atmosphere. Just as long as the company doesn’t encourage Rebecca Black to take any part in the festivities, we’re fine with that.
