The image was taken in Paris on the set of the Leos Carax film "Holly Motors" that also features Denis Lavant and Kylie Minogue.
Donning Winehouse's trademark beehive, heavy eye makeup, and a low-cut, form-fitting dress, Mendes plays opposite Lavant's character, a man who travels between parallel lives.
Over the course of 24 hours, Lavant's character experiences life as a murderer, beggar, CEO, monstrous creature and father. Mendes' plays a woman from Lavant's past.
"Holly Motors" is scheduled for a spring 2012 release.
Mendes' Winehouse look-alike moment comes as a new album from the troubled singer is prepped for release. Winehouse's "Lioness: Hidden Treasures," a collection of songs the "Rehab" singer recorded throughout her career, is due out December 6.
The album features collaborations with longtime Winehouse producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson. The troubled singer died at the age of 27 in July, the result of consuming too much alcohol.
Mendes isn't the only U.S. celebrity to make international news this week. Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell became a trending topic on Twitter in Brazil after he outraged Brazilian music fans when he referred to them as "uneducated about music" in an interview with Folha de S. Paulo, the countries' largest newspaper.
Country superstars Sugarland experienced an even bigger backlash associated with the Indiana State Fair stage collapse in August. The group was named in a lawsuit filed by the families of the four people who died and the 44 survivors. Teen idol Justin Bieber hopes to have dismissed a paternity lawsuit filed against him by 20-year-old Mariah Yeater. The 17-year-old singer recently took a DNA test to disprove that he is the father of Yeater's 3-year-old son.
Lastly, Bieber was among the celebrities in attendance at the American Music Awards which aired Sunday. Taylor Swift was the night's big winner.
