The secret to a smarter, smoother robot

The secret to a smarter, smoother robot - A Smarter & Smoother Robot Arm. Researchers have figured out a way to turn "moving like a robot" into a compliment. If someone tells you that you move like a robot it's not a compliment, unless you're doing the dance, just ask Al Gore. Robots have always been famous for making very rigid and stiff movements and there's a reason for that. While it's simple for a human to move their hand from the keyboard, pick up a cup of coffee, take a sip and put it back down, it's extremely difficult to come up with an equation for a robot to do the same thing.

Restaurants to try before you die
Restaurants to try before you die - These culinary destinations around the world include Michelin-star splurges and street food. From internationally known chefs to hole-in-the-wall eateries (that locals try to keep secret), and from comforting, familiar dishes to flavors that force you from your comfort zone, traveling for food is nourishing in every sense of the word. Beyond just being sustained, you'll learn something (even if it's just that you actually do like sushi), you'll feel connected to a new place (even if you go once and never need to go again), and you may come back a few pounds heavier (but happier).

Just reading those words summon Frank Sinatra's smoky voice and images of yellow cabs whisking fashionable denizens to the newest, chicest spots. New York's high-low cuisine is virtually unmatched, with bagels, pizza, and deli sandwiches as equally argued about as the city's haute cuisine. French, Italian, Greek, Japanese, and Chinese foods are well represented by the city's diverse melting-pot culture.

Eat: Impossible as it is to narrow it down, some of New York's can't-miss eateries include Le Bernardin and The Spotted Pig, while Eataly is a surefire hit with newcomers and old hands.

Sleep: The uber-hip Mercer Hotel is contemporary cool in the boutique and café mecca of SoHo, or book into The Surrey for an intimate uptown vibe.

California's premier wine regions boast lush vineyards and a bright blue coastline. The wines and flavors are oft-imitated and craved, from buttery white wines, earthy red wines, and fresh seafood to locally produced cheeses and farmers' market fruits and vegetables. Mexican flavors, too, like fresh fish tacos and hearty tamales have infiltrated Californian cuisine.

Eat: Try the bar at Cyrus in Healdsburg for a French Laundry-like meal without the set menu. Brassica in St. Helena, Jarvis Winery, and Joseph Phelps Vineyards are must-stops, as are the gorgeous grounds of Chateau St. Jean winery in Sonoma.

Wayne Gretzky's daughter tweets racy pics

Wayne Gretzky's daughter tweets racy pics - Paulina Gretzky has her account shut down after posting scantily clad photos of herself. Did The Great One shut down Paulina Gretzky’s tantalizing Twitter? Paulina Gretzky, the 22-year-old daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, had dabbled in pop music and acting before finding her true digital media calling: Posting provocative photos on social media.

She never became a music sensation, but she became an Internet legend.

As The Chive headline said, above its gallery of 34 scantily clad, cleavage-filled Paulina Gretzky images: "Paulina Gretzky is using the Twitter machine properly."

Properly, perhaps; to the liking of her father, perhaps not.

Paulina Gretzky's Twitter feed has been deleted, and David Graham of the Toronto Star pieces together a timeline that suggests Wayne Gretzky may have encouraged it?

As Gretzky's name was linked last week with the potential sale of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, it's possible the news raised the profile of his daughter's racy online photographs. Her dad was born and raised in Brantford, a far cry from the Hollywood nightlife that has attracted his eldest daughter. Before her Twitter was closed, she tweeted "Having a nice sit down dinner with my dad about social media..haha #SIKEEE (sic)."

Yes, as we all know, Wayne Gretzky summarily rejected the Hollywood lifestyle, having never once dropped his stick or unlaced his skates to party during his time in Los Angeles. Nope. Not once. The Puritan From Brantford they called 'im.

Alas, the Paulina Gretzky Twitter feed is no more; all we're left with are standing tributes to her social media acumen like "Paulina Gretzky's 77 Sexiest Twitpics" from Coed Magazine.

We were ahead of the Paulina Gretzky curve(s), publishing these now-iconic photos of her golfing in 2009. To see her mature into self-aware digital voyeur bait made us proud. Let's hope this is just Paulina Gretzky retooling her Twitter feed in order to monetize it, and not its Great One-mandated demise. After all, it's winter time, and vacations at the beach beckon.

Chael Sonnen and Arianny Celeste engage in war of words

Chael Sonnen and Arianny Celeste engage in war of words - MMA star's nasty diss of ring girl. One fighter has some mean words for Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste, and she fires back at him. Chael Sonnen knows how to start a fight. Though his sharp words are usually aimed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and anyone who supports Silva, he turned towards UFC Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste when asked about her in an interview to promote the World MMA Awards.

He was asked who he is supporting for Ring Girl of the Year in the awards ceremony that will take place in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

We only had one and that was Chandella [Powell]. The other was the IQ card girl. Arianny [Celeste] kind of walks around and holds up her latest test score. One time when there was a title fight, she got all the way up to five and we were very proud of her.

Ouch. Celeste and Sonnen then sparred on Twitter with messages that have been deleted. Celeste started:
Hey what's ur name.. after @spideranderson kicks your [expletive]..u won't even be able to count to 5!! Get ready to kiss brazils.

And Sonnen's reply:

Seems easy to wear a bikini and seems easy to walk in a circle, but try walking in a circle while wearing a bikini. Talented girl.

The original interviewer didn't ask Sonnen about the source of his issues with Celeste, but with Sonnen, he usually doesn't need a reason to call someone out. He became angry with Canada for no good reason, and a man who can hate that lovely, docile country for no good reason could easily extend his dislike to Celeste.

At the same time, it could also be Sonnen's marketing mind at work. He is hosting the awards, meaning that there is a fair to middling chance that he will have to share a stage with Celeste. This spat sure makes you want to watch the awards on FoxSports.com, doesn't it?

Christmas photos feature kids with guns

Christmas photos feature kids with guns - A gun club hosts an event for parents and their kids to pose for shots with Santa Claus. Arizona gun club lets children hold high-powered guns while posing for Christmas pictures. A local gun club in Scottsdale, Arizona is hosting an event for parents and their children to pose for pictures with Santa Claus while holding machine guns they would not be allowed to legally own. Even toddlers are permitted to hold high-powered firearms in the photos. Organizers say the event has so far attracted hundreds of participants.

The Scottsdale Gun Club advertises the event as "a one-of-a-kind opportunity to be photographed next to Santa while against a backdrop of a stunning $80,000 Garwood mini-gun and SGC's coolest belt fed machine guns including the M60, M249 and M240." The photos are $5 for club members and $10 for non-members.

A caption on the club's website reads: "Santa's Back With His Bag Of goodies. Get Your Holiday Picture With Santa & His Machine Guns!"

Club member Jennifer Dove told the Daily Mail that out of the hundreds of attendees at a similar event last year, only one participant declined the option of having their child pose with a gun:
"There's a huge community that's interested in firearms as a sport and a hobby," Dove said. "There's no reason they can't express their holiday spirit and their passion for that hobby." The club's general manager Ron Kennedy added: "Our members and guests enjoyed the concept and we are delighted to bring it back again this Holiday season."
Arizona has been no stranger to controversial gun stories this year, including both the attempted assassination of Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the "Fast and Furious" federal gun smuggling case.

U.K. eatery under fire for baby fee

U.K. eatery under fire for baby fee - Moms fume over a restaurant chain's $5 charge for infants who didn't even eat. Restaurant Apologizes for Charging $5 Baby Tax. Moms Still Fuming. Natasha Young's six-week-old son wasn't ordering off the menu at Cosmo's Restaurant in Croyden. But his mom still had to pay about $5 just to keep him on her lap at the table at England's largest eatery. Another new mom, Ana Sheridan, was told the same thing when she brought her 6-month-old daughter to the same restaurant.

"I was astonished as we explained she was exclusively breastfed and would be sitting on our laps, therefore not consuming any food or occupying an extra seat. They said it was their new policy. That was all," Sheridan told London's Evening Standard.

After an uproar over Cosmo's baby tax policy erupted in parenting forums around the Web, the restaurant posted a public apology to both women on their website for the "mistreatment by our staff."

In the same message, management also clarified their baby fee was only supposed to apply to toddlers who are actually eating the restaurant's food, not those who are swaddled in blankets, clamoring for breast-milk. "COSMO would like to assure customers that this is an isolated incident," writes Cosmo's management. "We will be retraining all employees at Croydon as a matter of urgency."

Maybe it was all a misunderstanding, but through this incident, a larger message was broadcast: Parents with young kids aren't going to take being penalized any longer. The recent trend in kid-free zones and bans on toddlers in restaurants has sparked a backlash. Many parents feel marginalized, even bullied when they take their toddlers out to a restaurant. While they may have gotten used to fellow patrons complaining about their crying babies, being charged extra for the privilege is the last straw.

Earlier this year, at a restaurant in the town of Bath, a group of moms were charged about $3 each for bringing in baby food as opposed to ordering off the children's menu. One message-board mom called the idea of a baby corkage fee "disgusting." Another wrote: "They don't charge for breastfeeding but it's probably only a matter of time!" Two weeks after the story erupted, the Bath restaurant withdrew of its baby fee and donated the profits made off of the surcharge to charity.

It was a victory for long-scorned parents and a battle cry to other establishments considering similar policies. So when word got out of Cosmo's baby charge a few months later, tempers really flared. "Shocking and shame on the management," writes one commenter on the Evening Standard's article. "You might as well charge a pregnant women for taking up extra space."

But not every parent sees it the same way. The Guardian's Hilary Osbourne defends Cosmo's staff for charging customers a baby fee. "As a parent, I know that once babies start weaning they can make a mess, and I can see why restaurants might want to charge for having to clean up after someone who is probably eating something their parents brought from home," she writes.

Guess it all boils down to what kind of 'mess' restaurants are will to clean up: a table full of baby food or a chorus of hungry parents, fed-up with being penalized every time they bring their child out to eat. Suddenly, that table isn't looking so messy.

Tobey Maguire, others settle over poker winnings

Tobey Maguire, others settle over poker winnings - Actor pays big to settle poker lawsuit. Tobey Maguire agrees to pay $80,000 to resolve a case involving poker and a convicted con man. Tobey Maguire has decided to fold 'em and settle a lawsuit over his winnings from a convicted con man during high-stakes Hollywood poker games.

The "Spider-Man" star agreed to pay $80,000 to settle the lawsuit filed over more than $311,000 he was paid by a convicted Ponzi scheme operator in Texas Hold 'Em matches that included celebrities, businessmen and others, court documents state.

If approved by a judge next month, Maguire will pay the money to a bankruptcy trustee who is trying to recoup money that former hedge fund operator Bradley Ruderman bilked from investors to finance his lavish lifestyle.

The money will be used to repay victims of the scheme, which Maguire and other players were unaware of.
Court records show that 14 of the 22 people sued to recoup poker winnings have settled their cases. Howard Ehrenberg, the bankruptcy trustee who sued the group, said Monday the poker settlements total more than $1.7 million.

Ehrenberg said Maguire's payout to resolve the case is in the same range as others who agreed to settlements.
"He did not end up with any better settlement than the others," Ehrenberg said.

Maguire's settlement states he "strongly disputes that he violated any laws, rules or regulations in regard to participating in the poker games" but was agreeing to the payment to avoid fighting the case, which would be costly.

The actor signed the settlement on Nov. 22 and it was filed a day later with a bankruptcy court handling the lawsuits.

The trustee alleged Maguire and others had no right to keep their winnings from the unlicensed poker games held at upscale hotels and private residences. Maguire and others have denied there was anything improper about the matches.

In court filings, Maguire noted that he lost $168,500 to Ruderman, who is currently serving a 10 year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud, two counts of investment adviser fraud and willful failure to file taxes.

Several of those sued are fighting the cases, most notably actor-director Nick Cassavetes. His attorney has said the games were not illegal and the statute of limitations has long passed for pursuing any criminal charges for the games held between 2006 and 2009.

Ehrenberg said he expects the remaining cases will be resolved before trial.

Filings show that billionaire Alec Gores and "Welcome Back, Kotter" star and poker aficionado Gabe Kaplan have also settled cases filed against them.

Gores, who along with his brother attempted to buy Miramax films last year, has agreed to pay $49,908 to settle a $445,500 lawsuit over Ruderman's poker payments.

Kaplan has agreed to pay $26,900 after he was sued to try to recoup nearly $63,000 in winnings.

Ehrenberg filed the lawsuits in late March, attempting to recoup money on behalf of people who invested in the scheme by Ruderman.

Lindsey Vonn begins divorce proceedings with her husband

Lindsey Vonn begins divorce proceedings with her husband - Olympic darling Lindsey Vonn's sad news. The gold medal skier reveals she's splitting from her husband of four years. Lindsey Vonn, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the top American skiers of all time, confirmed Sunday night that she has started divorce proceedings with her husband and chief adviser, Thomas Vonn.

The couple grew to fame at last year's Vancouver Olympics, when Vonn won a gold medal and excitedly embraced her husband at the bottom of the slope. He has been at her side through her three World Cup titles, often wearing a radio to communicate with his wife at the top of the hill.

They married Sept. 29, 2007.

Lindsey's relationship with Thomas caused a rift with her father, due to the nine-year age difference between the couple and because Thomas replaced her dad as a coach and mentor. Alan Kildow wasn't invited to his daughter's wedding and the two remain estranged.

"This is an extremely difficult time in my personal life and I hope the media and my fans can respect my need for privacy on this matter," Vonn wrote in a statement.

In defense of a media that almost certainly won't respect Vonn's need for privacy on this matter, Lindsey and Thomas made their relationship a story at every opportunity. They posed for cute pictures, she gave countless interviews about his influence, he mugged for television time so much that his friends called him by his initials "TV." The couple embraced the fact that he was a sort of Svengali figure in her life and played it up for the press. The ending of a marriage is nothing to take lightly. But when you invite the spotlight during the good times, you have to put up with its glare during the rough ones.

iPhone 4 Explodes Midflight on Australian Airline - Passenger's iPhone 4 explodes midflight. A flight attendant acts fast as the phone emits "dense smoke" and a "red glow" on an Australian flight. Apple’s iPhones are always among the hottest gadgets of any holiday shopping season, but for one passenger on an Australian flight, the phone was too hot to handle — literally.

While on Australian flight Regional Express ZL319 Friday, a passenger’s iPhone 4 (not the iPhone 4S, which is Apple’s latest model) suddenly started “emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow,” according to a Regional Express statement.

The plane, which was flying from Lismore to Sydney, was in the midst of landing when the incident occured. “In accordance with company standard safety procedures, the flight attendant carried out recovery actions immediately, and the red glow was extinguished successfully,” according to Regional Express’ statement.

After landing, the iPhone was handed over to officials at the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. There’s no official word yet on what caused the phone to combust.

Exploding Apple products are rare, but explosions have happened in the past, mostly related to the devices’ lithium ion batteries overheating.

The European Union launched an investigation in 2009 after multiple instances of iPhones and iPod Touches exploding or catching fire midflight were reported in the U.K., Holland, France and Sweden.

Apple also recalled its first-generation of iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 because the battery would overheat and “pose a safety risk,” according to the company’s website.

Facebook IPO seen coming in spring

Facebook IPO seen coming in spring - Wondering when the great Facebook initial public offering is coming? Try the second quarter of 2012 market conditions permitting, The Wall Street Journal said late Monday. The social-networking company is in talks with the Securities and Exchange Commission about the timing of the IPO. There is a chance the first filings will come this year, the Journal said.

The Journal said Facebook is thinking about an IPO that would raise $10 billion and theoretically value the company at more than $100 billion.

That would make the company among the 40 most valuable companies in the world -- on par with Toyota Motor (TM 0.00%), Verizon Communications (VZ 0.00%) and Merck (MRK 0.00%).

The Journal based its report on conversations with several sources, adding the caveat that final decisions have not yet been made.

The final value of the company -- the value used to price shares - and how much money it seeks in an IPO will largely be determined by the market and the European economy, the Journal said.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has in the past publicly expressed reluctance to do an IPO. And he has opted to keep Facebook private longer than many suspected he would. But he is warming to the idea, the Journal said.

The social network, which was started by Zuckerberg in 2004 out of his Harvard dorm room, has helped reshape how people share information and interact with others on the Web. It now counts 800 million users, with 500 million users logging into the site daily.

Facebook's IPO would come amid a spate of other hot Web IPOs this year, like daily-deal site Groupon (GRPN 0.00%), LinkedIn (LNKD 0.00%) and an expected IPO from social-game maker Zynga. But none of those will compare in size, scale and investor demand with Facebook, which is one of the most highly anticipated IPOs ever.

The disappointing showing of Groupon's stock, which has fallen below its $20 IPO price in recent trading, may make some investors cautious about a Facebook IPO.

Groupon has fallen nearly 42% in the past five trading days after initially surging in the first two weeks after the IPO earlier this month. It is now 23.8% below its $20 IPO price.

Mahna Mahna

Mahna Mahna - Catchy Muppets song has Dirty little secret. How a ditty from a soft-core Italian movie became the Muppets’ catchiest tune. With guest vocalists ranging from Joanna Newsom to Mickey Rooney, the soundtrack to The Muppets reboot leaves no demographic unserved. But the song audiences are likely to be humming on the way out of the theater wasn’t composed, or even recorded, for the new film.

Jim Henson’s immortal creations have lent their distinctive voices to plenty of great songs—“Bein’ Green,” written by Henson standby Joe Raposo, or Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection”—but none quite have the nagging persistence of “Mahna Mahna,” which helps bring The Muppets to a rousing finish.

“Mahna Mahna” is as catchy as a song can be, like a fishing hook stuck in your tympanum. Most people know the tune from a classic sketch that aired during The Muppet Show’s 1976 premiere, in which an orange-haired hepcat unsuccessfully tries to persuade two hot-pink creatures with long, disapproving snouts to get into the “Mahna Mahna” groove. But the bit goes back further, and the song further still, originating in, of all places, an Italian soft-core movie called Sweden: Heaven and Hell.

In the tradition of the shocking, factually questionable Mondo Cane, Heaven and Hell was styled as a documentary about Scandinavian sexuality, which provided a thin veneer of respectability for its leering exploration of lesbian nightclubs and meter maids who moonlight as nude models. In the scene where “Viva la Sauna Svedese”—as the song was originally titled—makes its appearance, the camera follows a bevy of statuesque, fur-swaddled blondes as they make their way through the snow to a sauna, then cuts to the same women clad only in carelessly draped towels, giggling as they soak up the heat.

Composer Piero Umiliani’s C.V. includes the 1958 classic Big Deal on Madonna Street, but by 1968, he seems to have been more concerned with quantity than quality; Heaven and Hell was one of 11 credits for him that year; he’d had a dozen the year before that.* But he was onto something with this brief, catchy snippet, which, when released as a single under the title “Mah Nà Mah Nà,” made it to No. 55 on the U.S. charts. The nasal, kazoo-like vocals by Alessandro Alessandrini have the hallmarks of an instant novelty hit, which is to say they’re at once annoying and unforgettable.

As “Mah Nà Mah Nà” climbed the charts, the fledgling Children’s Television Workshop was struggling to settle on a format for their educational TV program, Sesame Street. CTW co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney had recently given the OK to bring in Jim Henson, whose Muppet characters had at that point been seen only in commercials and on variety programs like The Ed Sullivan Show. Henson, a bearded bohemian with no experience in children’s programming, was something of an odd choice, but that was just why Cooney wanted him.

Mahna Mahna, as the character would come to be known, made his televised debut on Nov. 27, 1969, during Sesame Street’s first season. (The YouTube clip below reads Nov. 30, but the authoritative MuppetWiki says Nov. 27.) The setup is identical to the more familiar Muppet Show version, with Mahna Mahna’s hoarse scat pitted against the dulcet “doo dee doo” of the twin Snouths (a portmanteau of “snout” and “mouth”), who shake their heads and purse their lips in disapproval when their irrepressible colleague strays from the script.

In Street Gang, Michael Davis’s history of Sesame Street, several of Henson’s colleagues describe his artistic style as “affectionate anarchy,” and it doesn’t take much in the way of exegesis to see an anti-conformist message at work here. As Mahna Mahna’s antics grow wilder, the Snouths grow more uneasy and eventually counterattack, smother him with their bodies. But Mahna Mahna eventually breaks free and runs right at the camera, making contact to the sound of shattering glass.
